Undertaken at its highest level, calligraphy is recognised as a fine art. It is also very rewarding as a hobby and has become a very popular way of adding beauty and interest to handmade cards, invitations, place settings etc.

Inks for Calligraphy

  • Daler Rowney Calli Inks - Highly pigmented , light fast and water proof. For use with dip pens, ruling pens and brush.

  • Winsor & Newton Calligraphy Inks - Similar qualities to Calli inks. There is a small range of colours that can also be used in a fountain pen.

  • Manuscript and Rotring "Brillant" Cartridges - For use in fountain pens.

  • Daler Rowney FW Acrylic Inks - 30 high quality water-based colours, drying to a water resistant, light fast finish. For use with dip pen, ruling pen and brush.

  • Daler Rowney FW Pearlescent Acrylic Inks - 21 shimmering, pearlescent colours. Water based but drying to a water resistant light fast finish. Highly unusual and decorative effects can be achieved. For use with dip pen, ruling pen and brush.

  • Windsor and Newton Artists' Drawing Inks - 26 gorgeous colours formed from soluble dyes in a shellac solution. They are intermixable, water resistant when dry (except for Liquid Indian) and can be diluted with distilled water. For use with dip pen, ruling pen and brush. Apart from white, gold, silver and waterproof black these inks are Not Light Fast.

  • Chinese Ink Sticks - Solid sticks of colour (works of art in themselves) which are reconstituted into liquid ink by grinding on an ink stone and adding water. The black ink is made from soot and glue.

Pens for Calligraphy

  • Dip Pens Using a dip pen and a bottle of ink or a Chinese ink stick is the traditional method used by calligraphers and will give the most professional finish. Different width nibs and different types and colours of ink will give you an endless and beautiful variety of results. Practice will be rewarded. We stock a selection of handles, reservoirs and nibs.

  • Fountain Pens for Calligraphy

    • Manuscript Calligraphy Sets - These are economical, easy to use and extremely popular. We have a range of sets from Starter to Deluxe. Each set contains a selection of nibs, cartridges, an adaptor for use with bottled ink and an instructions leaflet.

    • Rotring Art Pens - Come with cartridges and an instruction leaflet. Adapters for use with bottled ink can be bought separately. Calligraphy nib sizes 1.1, 1.5, 1.9 and 2.3mm.

  • Chinese Bamboo Pens - Simple double ended pens for doing traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting.

  • Felt Tips for Calligraphy - These are economical and very easy to use. They are great for posters, signs, invitations, everyday writing etc.

    • Edding Calligraphy Pens - Nib sizes 2.0, 3.5 and 5.0mm. These are Not Light Fast.

    • Kuretake Twin-Ended Pen - 2.0 and 3.5mm in one pen. Black and a selection of colours. Water based, water proof, non-bleeding, light fast pigment ink.

Brushes for Calligraphy

Brushes are useful to achieve the flowing, artistic style which is typical of Chinese calligraphy. You can use more or less any brush which has a good point and holds plenty of liquid. The following have been tried and tested as giving successful results.

Paper for Calligraphy

You can work on virtually any smooth surfaced paper, card or board but the following have been developed especially for calligraphy.

  • Chinese Rice Paper - A fine, absorbent paper traditionally used for Chinese calligraphy and painting.

  • Parchment Paper - 50x70cm 175 gsm, or packs of A4 lightweight paper. Cloudy finish, white or cream.

  • Pergamonata - 50x70cm 230 gsm. Unique hard surface. Cloudy, slightly translucent finish. White and cream.

  • Daler Rowney Calligraphy Pads - A4 and A3. Assorted colours, cloudy finish.

Other Equipment for Calligraphy

  • Calligraphers' Rule - Gridded and calibrated, transparent rule. Ideal for measuring and lining-up.

  • Tin boxes - to store nibs safely.

  • Drawing Boards - A number of the drawing boards we stock are useful for calligraphy but the most versatile is the A3 break resistant, lightweight plastic board. It has a moveable parallel rule with lock release and integrated protractor, paper grip and gradations along 2 sides.
